 On a visit to a local company
Before paying a visit to a local company in Vietnam, it is necessary to first finish some
appropriate procedures. It is common to phone or mail to make an appointment first in Japan
before the visit, while in Vietnam it still is the same, as first of all you need to contact the
company via phone but then you have to submit a business letter to the company you want to
visit.

Location of BienHoa Sugar Joint Stock Company

BienHoa industrial park is located in the North East 25 km away from Ho Chi Minh city, 40
minutes by car. BienHoa industrial park is divided into BienHoa I and BienHoa II separated by a
highway. Having been constructed in 1963, BienHoa I has been houses for many Vietnamese
local enterprises as well as Japanese invested corporations including AjinoMoto, Suzuki etc all
of which early joined in to develop their businesses in Vietnam. BienHoa II was built in 1995
and is housing major corporations such as Fujitsu, Sanyo, Mabuchi Motor etc. BienHoa Sugar is
located on a slope which is on the right hand side from the entrance of BienHoa I. I was much
impressed by its appearance and by how much the lawn around was taken care of.

About company's business status

Presently, the company's production site of 22 hecta area can produce 3500 tons of sugar.
Parallel to it lies another site of 38 hecta area and is under construction. If it is finished, the
total sugar produced can increase up to 6000 tons. Also, not stopping at sugar refinement, we
are currently growing sugar canes in a 1000 hecta farm. The future vision of our company's
activities, which is to run our businesses in all stages of production, is not only about sugar
cane cultivation, but also about sugar production, refinement as well as production of sugar
related products. |
About new projects

We are planning to grow sugar canes/tapioca, in cooperation with Cambodian government.
Cultivated area stays in the border region of Combodia where it meets Tay Ninh province, land
preparation has already been finished. Its total area is 10000 hecta. We also plan to make
etanol products from cultivated canes/tapioca.
Moreover, we are having a plan to build a port to export our products in cooperation with
other provinces. We too plan to work with a Czech company for vodka production and with a
wine producer in Japan to produce Japanese shochu wine. We have pretty many projects to do
now.

About human resource management

 We lead our crew in a combination of both a Japanese style and an Oriental style of Europeans
and Americans. That is, basically speaking we need treat our employees with an open heart.
Half of the number of job quitters is resulted from emotional problems. We hold a meeting
and a class of management skills on every Friday for employees to understand each other
better. Also, our engineering staff once had to work hard continuously in 100 days, we then
decided to offer them a one week sightseeing trip to Ha Noi. Of course I went there with them.
The ratio of job quitters in our company is around 5-7% per year. We are trying to build a
better working environment for our employees. |
About the future of sugar menufacturing industry

Sugar industry has been promoted for better development until now by our government, I
think we need to stand on our feet from now on. In fact, there have been similar sugar
manufacturers in the industry but they go bankrupt. That's why I think manufacturing products
of good quality as well as earning customers'supports is the most important thing to do. I am
proud to claim that the quality of our sugar products is ranked No 1 in Vietnam. And we are
the only company in Vietnam to export sugar to foreign countries. The business competition is
getting intenser from now but I do believe our company would survive after all. |
